Dr. Robert Brody and 149 other forward-thinking naturopathic physicians and medical students joined America’s top natural medicine experts this past weekend as they gathered in the nation’s capital to call upon the US legislature to widen the options available in our country’s VA Medical system. While speaking to the nation’s legislators, Naturopathic Physician, Robert Brody of Bridgeport, CT said the majority of VA patients can benefit significantly from access to natural medicine, and it is time the system caught up with the demand.
“Naturopathic medicine emphasizes what’s known as ‘The Triple Aim’: providing better care, better outcomes, and lowering costs,” said Dr. Brody. “There’s a crisis in health care, and we’re standing by to play our part in the solution to the issues facing many of those who have served their country.” “Pilot programs run inside the VA have shown the benefit of disciplines like acupuncture and chiropractic, and now it’s time to add naturopathic medicine, says Dr. Brody. “It’s as simple as assigning us a provider code.”
Dr. Robert Brody was part of an army of naturopathic physicians and students who gathered in Washington for a weekend of legislative training and visits with 600 congressional staff and legislators. Amongst the other legislative priorities: adding naturopathic physicians to the roster of providers for Medicare.
“Our veterans often return with multiple issues that don’t always respond well to conventional care,” said Dr. Brody. “Many have found significant relief from experiencing integrative care, and we’d like to be a part of it. Add to that the system-wide shortage of primary care providers, and the stories of long waiting lists that have plagued VA, and we’re perfectly positioned to play our part in the solution, serving those who have served their country”.
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession that adds science-based natural interventions to conventional medical practice. Naturopathic physicians are trained as primary care providers who diagnose, treat and manage patients with acute and chronic conditions, while addressing disease and dysfunction at the level of body, mind and spirit.
They concentrate on whole-patient wellness through health promotion and disease prevention, attempting to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition. They provide individualized, evidence-informed therapies that balance the least harmful and most effective approaches to help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health.
