Support Naturopathic Physician Prescriptive Rights
The 2018 Legislative Session is underway and Connecticut Naturopathic Physicians Association (CNPA) has made progress in our effort to bring prescriptive authority to Naturopathic Doctors here in Connecticut. We need you to contact your State Senator and State Representative in support of the proposal.
Background
House Bill 5294 would give the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health the authority to develop a drug formulary for Naturopathic Physicians.
The bill received a public hearing in the Public Health Committee on March 5. This was a huge accomplishment! CNPA had several testifiers that included representatives from the University of Bridgeport Naturopathic College. Our testifiers made a good case to the committee and we appreciate that over 100 individuals submitted written statements in support House Bill 5294. Unfortunately, the committee held the bill and did not take a vote on it before their deadline. Nonetheless, we are pursuing the proposal and have options available to attach it as an amendment to another bill.
Legislation Specifics
- The DPH Commissioner is given the authority to develop and implement a formulary of drugs that Naturopathic Physicians could prescribe.
- Those NDs who wish to have this new responsibility would need to complete education and examination requirements developed by the commissioner.
- NDs have the education and training for prescription medications. We see patients and can diagnose their illness, but cannot write a prescription for it when warranted.
