A recent study on mice has shown a potential connection between sugary drinks and colon cancer. An eight-week test was done with two groups of mice that were genetically altered to grow colon tumors. The first group was given one dose of high-fructose corn syrup every day. The other group of mice received nothing.
At the end of the experiment, the mice who had received the high-fructose corn syrup had larger tumors than the control group.
While this study was performed on mice and not humans, our systems react to high-fructose corn syrup in a similar way. This research could explain why colon cases have recently surged among young adults. This means that those with colon cancer or higher risk should remove sugary drinks from their diet. It can also lead to potential ideas for treatment plans, such as a diet low in sugar.
Colon cancer typically starts as a small group of cells known as a polyp. This polyp eventually grows into a tumor. While the mice who had normal diets still had their tumors grow, the mice who had high-fructose corn syrup had their tumors grow significantly larger. This study was able to show that consuming high-fructose corn syrup plays a significant role in polyps growing into tumors.
