In a healthy digestive system, the fungi and bacteria can all co-exist in harmony. With a healthy balance between the two, our digestive system is able to break down foods normally. We have plenty of research on how the bacteria can affect our digestion, but what about the fungi?
Researchers looked into the role of how fungi can affect our digestion, and any changes can alter our symptoms. Researchers were able to find Candida and Malassezia played a large role in disrupting our digestive system. Patients suffering from Crohn’s Disease had a significantly elevated level of Candida and Malassezia in their stool, and those suffering from ulcerative colitis had a small variety of fungi in their stools. Patients were able to utilize an anti-fungal treatment plan to reduce their symptoms for Candida and Malassezia infections. The researchers also found that diets high in carbohydrates produced more Candida, whereas diets high in protein had the opposite effect.
Researchers found that we can help cure inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, by altering the our fungal microbiota. Sacchromyces bouillardi, found in a probiotic Dr. Brody often uses, was shown to heal the gut. It had a therapeutic effect, helping to restore and strengthen the microbiome.
