Dr. Brody’s Natural Approach to Adrenal Fatigue
Most of the time people can relate their fatigue back to their adrenal glands. These glands are small and sit on top of your kidneys. They are responsible for controlling your stress response. Sometimes these glands produce hormones that become elevated and stay elevated for long periods of time causing a worn out, used feeling called adrenal fatigue. Ideally, these hormones should have drastic spike and decline allowing for a proper response to stress.
Catecholamines (Epinephrine and Nori-Epinephrine)
One class of hormones that adrenals release are called catecholamines. These are neurotransmitters that are responsible for the feeling you get when you are afraid. This can be described as that icy feeling in your veins when someone cuts you off while driving. When constantly in a state of “fight or flight”, which is so common these days, it can do a number on your entire body including adrenal fatigue when all these hormones are used up.
Things you can do to control catecholamines:
- Aerobic exercises: To use the catecholamines being produced
- Magnesium and Vitamin B2: To help break down catecholamines
Another main hormone your adrenal glands release is called cortisol, aka the stress hormone. This is the chemical that makes you gain weight, feel depressed, have insomnia, have aches and pains in your body and overall the cause for that general run down feeling. This adrenal fatigue can cause long-term health problems if not dealt with.
Things you can do to control cortisol:
- Calming exercises like yoga and Tai Chi
- Probiotics that containing Lactobacillus reuteri
Adrenal fatigue can be easily addressed with diet, exercise, and the appropriate supplementation. Because you are a unique person and have unique needs, your treatment needs to be tailored to you. This includes what type of exercise you should be doing along with what types of foods you should be eating to balance out these hormones.
