Dr. Brody’s Natural Approach to Heartburn
When stomach acid travels up or down the esophagus, it causes problems. If it travels up it is usually called heartburn or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Common symptoms are; a sore throat, pain in your chest, burping, sour taste in your mouth, etc. If the acid travels down, it can cause ulcers and other problems. The secret that most people (and even doctors) don’t know is that heartburn is not always caused by high stomach acid. This fact has been known since the 1960’s and is in many medical books but most people don’t think it’s true.
Let’s stop and think about it–if you have low stomach acid normally, your body is comfortable with it at a certain level. If you then decide to eat a nice juicy piece of steak, your body all of a sudden has to produce a lot of stomach acid quickly to break down the steak. When it does this, the level of acid in your stomach increases and stays elevated even after you are done digesting your steak. This acid can then travel up to your throat and cause heartburn. If the opposite is true and you have high stomach acid normally and you do not eat a steak but instead some greens, your body will break down those vegetables really quickly and cause the excess stomach acid to travel up your esophagus, leading to the symptoms of heartburn.
Bacteria Causes of Heartburn
H. pylori is a common bacteria that is associated with heart burn. This bacteria, which has the appearance of a corkscrew, likes to place itself in the stomach and adds a protective tent over the top of itself to protect it from the immune system. Different natural treatments can kill this bacteria and allow the stomach to health from the damaged it causes. Other bacteria such as Methanobrevibacter spp. which produces methane gas just like H. Pylori is another bacteria that like to cause heartburn.
