A study published by the American Journal of Emergency Medicine in November 2016 compared acupuncture and morphine’s ability to reduce and relieve pain. The researchers split a group of 300 patients with acute to moderate pain in half and provided treatments. The two groups were similar across the board in age, gender and weight. The 150 that received acupuncture had a 92% success rate of pain reduction, while the 150 receiving morphine intravenously only had a 78% success rate.
Of those who received the treatment, 89 patients experienced minor adverse effects and none had any major adverse effects. Of these 89 patients, only four received acupuncture.
The study also used a timeline to compare the speed of each treatment. By the five minute mark, the acupuncture group was reporting a noticeably larger decrease in pain than the morphine group.
Overall, the acupuncture group reported a faster, more effective treatment plan with less adverse effects than the morphine group.
